When We Distributed Ration To An Entire Village Of 300 Downtrodden Families

At a time when India was grappling with a crippling second Covid wave, and the livelihood of daily wage earners was severely affected, Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation organised one of its massive welfare initiatives.

Around 2,200 kg of food was distributed to 300 families of daily wage workers and rag pickers spread across two villages in Bihar. Interestingly, the campaign was anchored largely by the locals themselves, whose active involvement ensured its success.

This food distribution drive was held in the Khagda and Machmara villages of Kishanganj district of Bihar on May 1. The two villages are made up of around 600 mud houses; residents belong to some of the most poverty-stricken sections of the society.

The foundation came to know about the plight of the villagers through one of our earlier beneficiaries, Birendra. He prepared a list of around 200 families that badly needed help.

Birendra volunteered to pilot this drive on the ground. He was ably assisted by two of his friends, Pawan and Munna, and others from the local community. With the help of our founders, Birendra and his team were able to make the food distribution drive a grand success.

We had initially planned to serve only the severely vulnerable families, but needy folk from nearby villages also arrived. We were happy to offer them support as well, and we can happily say that every food packet that we had prepared was distributed. Each packet contained 5 kg of rice, 1 kg of moong dal, a packet of soya chunks, 1 kg of potatoes and a bottle of edible oil.

The villagers thanked us profusely after receiving the ration kits, saying that the help was no less than divine intervention for them.

We at Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation always make sure that even if we cannot physically reach an individual or a family, their needs don’t remain unfulfilled. Motivating some of the locals to helm the sewa work on our behalf at the grassroots level as in Kishanganj has been an example of this.
