When Our Timely Intervention Saved A Family From Drowning In Debt

Vicky Kumar, a resident of Ghaziabad, lives a stressful life. Vicky and his family had migrated to Delhi and then to Ghaziabad from Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district in search of a better life. He took up teaching in a local private school, while his father took to tailoring.

His dreams of making a decent living were soon to fall flat, as last year’s lockdown drove him into the depths of despair. While people were busy taking the Dalgona Coffee Challenge, watching reruns of the Ramayana and Mahabharata and trying to rediscover their long-lost interests and hobbies, assured that the pandemic would soon pass, Vicky’s universe was turning less and less hunky-dory.

Debts started piling up and the lockdown stretched on and on. Battered by the lockdown, the tailoring business of Vicky’s father was in tatters. The family had taken a loan to buy sewing machines, but the machines could not earn money. There were hardly any customers and the sewing machines sat idle. Vicky could not repay the loan and was hounded by debtors. Vicky says they tried to set him on fire. There seemed to be no respite from the ordeals.

That is when Sewa Nyaya Utthan Foundation came across Vicky and his family. We decided to pay off the loan straightaway. We provided his family with ration kits as well.

We also tried to get him settled in a job. Vicky worked with us as a volunteer for a few days, but then, his sister’s health deteriorated and he had to leave. Things were not working out as well as we had imagined they would. Subsequently, Vicky and his family had to leave Delhi.

Unfortunately, just when we thought we had been able to rescue Vicky, he slipped back into trouble. Yet, we are happy that we have been able to at least help him in clearing his debts.
