Bala Devi lives in a village in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh. She works as a househelp.
Every day, she takes an autorickshaw and reaches the city to work in residential housing societies.
Bala Devi lost her husband seven years ago. She has four children. One of her two daughters was married when her husband was still alive. After he died, she worked hard to ensure that all the three children continued to get their education. Her eldest son is now in college while the other two are still in school.
When her husband was alive, Bala Devi’s day would involve housework, cooking and tending to a cow and a Buffalo owned by the family. After his death in an accident, she sold them off as she was forced to go out and earn an income.
Our founder, Swati Goel Sharma, met Bala Devi during a visit to Ghaziabad. She was in despair, as the pandemic proved to be a disaster for her. She was forced to stay at home without an income. There was almost a complete stop on travelling outside, and no house was calling her for work. They even refused to pay her the monthly salary.
She sustained her family with help from some of her relatives in the village. But then, everybody was struggling that time.
Sharing her hardships, Bala Devi said with a heavy heart, “There are too many problems.”
Sewa Naya Utthan Foundation helped her with the salary she had missed out on. She thanked us profusely. She said the monetary help took some burden off her shoulders. Since the first grant, we have helped her a few more times as lockdown continued.
Bala Devi is a strong woman, who took it upon herself to educate her children all alone. She is standing stiff like a rock between her family and a deluge of problems. She says she wishes to educate all her children so they can live a better life. She belongs to a poor, scheduled caste family.
We respect her determination and hard work. We also strive to help many Bala Devis amidst us, who bounce back, no matter what challenges life throws at them.
